A note of the History of this property:
Morningstar Acres is the culmination of several different stories that have come together
to make this place what it is today. Once the home of Steve Beaumont, a retired
carpenter who devoted his life to caring for the land he called home. Steve constructed
the home and other infrastructure on the property himself. He planted prairie on the
ridge top to continue to protect soil and increase wildlife habitat. Steve also gardened
and grew his own food on the property.
The farm entered a new chapter when Steve decided to donate the land to the
Sustainable Iowa Land Trust (SILT). His gift ensured that Morningstar Acres would
forever remain a place for sustainable table-food farming and natural resource
conservation. With SILT’s support, Adrian White and her former business partner Wil
Lorentzen brought new energy and visions to the farm, creating Jupiter Ridge Farm.
They established themselves as vegetable farmers growing produce on several acres of
land on the ridge as well as utilizing the woodlands for shiitake mushroom farming. They
used sustainable farming practices including minimized tillage, low synthetic chemical
use, and incorporating cover crops. There are perennial crops on the property including
a successful rhubarb patch and fruit trees. The property has the capacity to sustain
another future vegetable operation and other farming enterprises with infrastructure
including sheds, hydrants, solar panels, a walk-in cooler, and a greenhouse.
This property has been able to continue the legacy of Steve Beaumont’s love for the
land. Before his passing, he would mention how important it was to him that the land be
taken care of after he is gone. SILT will continue to honor Steve’s wishes by finding
farmers like Adrian and Will to steward and manage the property.
